Seasonal Transitions and Your Health

The seasons and their elemental associations are integral to Chinese medicine theory and practice. Summer is hot and yang, energy is expansive, outward and full of growth. As we slowly make our way toward the Autumn equinox there is a turning towards a more yin time of the year, more quiet and introspection, reaping what was sown in the previous months.

In Chinese medicine the seasons are not events that are separate or external from us, instead we integrate them into our lives and see the internal changes of our mind and body. Our ability to change with the seasons is reflected in our health and happiness and maintaining balance through these seasonal transitions deeply benefits our wellbeing.

Many people find that around the change of seasons physical symptoms like colds and flu, coughs, seasonal allergies, or aches and pains may arise or worsen. Emotional imbalances and stressors may intensify.

Consider the three weeks before and after the Autumn equinox as especially important times for creating this seasonal transition balance. Acupuncture, herbs, diet and self care can all help strengthen immunity and regulate the nervous system. This time of self-care can greatly set the stage for the kind of fall and winter you will have.
